A TEENAGE boy who was shot at Spes Bona High School in Athlone on Wednesday morning has died.
Groote Schuur Hospital spokesperson Alaric Jacobs confirmed to News24 that the boy died at 13:15 after doctors tried to stabilise him in the hospital trauma unit.
There are conflicting reports on the details surrounding the shooting which unfolded outside Spes Bona High.
Provincial minister for education, Donald Grant, says the 17-year-old was shot just after 08:00 while entering the school premises in Athlone, SAPA reported.
He was allegedly shot by a person not enrolled at Spes Bona, but who was dressed in the school’s uniform.
A phone call to an ambulance and paramedics was made from Spes Bona High School, but paramedics were able to revive the teenager before taking him to Groote Schuur Hospital, Grant says.
The Western Cape Education Department had arranged for trauma counselling at the school for pupils and teachers at the Athlone school.
However, police officials say the victim was, in fact, 18-years-old and was approached by three males dressed in Spes Bona High School tracksuit tops – two of whom were allegedly armed.
"One of them fired shots at the victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head," Captain FC van Wyk says.
An attempted murder case has been opened and no arrest has been made.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and the motive is yet to be established, and therefore it is not possible to speculate on gang violence at this stage," Van Wyk adds.
