ARE you a single mother and need some support as you go through your life?
Then the Single Mom Support Group is for you.
The support group is offered in Silvertown by Kaashifa Kolia, a registered counsellor.
The focus is on single mothers who are in dire need of some support, whether financially, socially, spiritually or emotionally.
She says the idea for the support group came about because she saw how women were struggling and she wanted to make a difference.
“Single mothers are so busy and have so many responsibilities that they forget about themselves and with this support group I want mothers to know that support is there for them,” says Kolia.
“It won’t be a clinical approach where I speak and they learn from me. With this support group, the women will learn from each other. Each one will have different reasons why they need support and they will be there for each other.” Kolia says she will also need to speak to each woman individually to assess the best way to offer them assistance and support. “I used to work with domestic violence cases, but now I want to focus on helping single moms who need the help. I want them to know that they need to take care of themselves before they take care of their children.” The support group starts on Saturday 25 February and will take place every second week, from 10:00 until 11:30. The cost is R50 per session. “Although the support groups will mainly be in Silvertown, if the number of people who need assistance in other areas is enough to form a group, they can contact me and I will be willing to go to those areas,” said Kolia.
Kolia is also flexible and if people need support groups at night rather, then she will be be willing to assist.
