TWO reservists at the Athlone Police Station have been arrested for rape.

The action comes after a female prisoner reported the duo, who are also court orderlies, during her court appearance.

It is understood that the woman was arrested for theft last week and the alleged incident occurred while she was in the police’s holding cells.

The woman appeared before a magistrate on Monday 13 February and her case was postponed for further investigation. After the information was delivered, the woman apparently burst into tears.

After the magistrate asked the woman why she was crying, the suspect alleged that the two reservists had sexually assaulted her. The duo was arrested later that day and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where the case was postponed until March.

The men were released on R500 bail.

The woman is currently being detained at Pollsmoor Prison’s women’s section.
